CNBPA’s annual meeting focuses on expanding membership and organizational change

On Tuesday November 17, the CNBPA held its Annual General Meeting at the University Club in Toronto. The meeting was well attended and enjoyed special guests, including past CNBPA presidents, longtime members and even Sinterklaas who had treats—and a few good-spirited jabs—for the guests.

After the official part of the program, where the 2010 budget and board were approved, Toronto-based motivational speaker Hugh MacPhie made a presentation. He is about to launch his first, self-published book Don't Forget Your Cape! What Preschoolers Teach Us About Leadership and Life, which deals with business and leadership. Inspired by stories and anecdotes about his two preschool-aged sons, Jackson and John, Hugh draws a parallel between the kids' world and the business world, especially on how to effect change. Through vivid stories from business, history and pop culture, he makes management theory simple to understand. Hugh compares changes in the lives of young children to making changes in organizations.

The cape analogy was inspired by Hugh's sons and their interest in superheroes. His main observation is that his sons stand straighter and perform better with a superhero cape on their shoulders. His message is that it will work the same way in your organization – by giving your employees the tools they need, as well as the confidence that they are a special breed, destined for great achievements.
